Aug. 3, 2010 – The 57th edition of the World’s Greatest Aviation Celebration finished with a flourish Aug. 1 as the 2010 EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin came to a close.
Some 535,000 people attended North America’s most popular aviation event and more than 10,000 aircraft arrived at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh and other airports in east-central Wisc. And while heavy rains proved to be a challenge for organizers early in the week – fields traditionally filled with planes remained eerily empty – attendance numbers were similar to totals from 2006 through 2008 (and just off record numbers in 2009).
Case in point, exhibitors visited by Wings Monday through Thursday were very pleased with the turnout, citing quality visits from attendees eager to check out the latest and greatest aviation technology.
The event featured more than 2,380 showplanes, including 1,106 homebuilt aircraft, 635 vintage airplanes, 374 warbirds, 115 ultralights, 120 seaplanes and 30 rotorcraft.
The total number of commercial exhibitors increased from 750 in 2009 to 777 this year, while 2,167 international visitors registered from 66 nations.
Next year’s event runs from July 25-31 in Oshkosh.
