Nov. 15, 2010, Toronto - On Friday, the Canadian Air & Space Museum
celebrated the delivery of the 1,000th Bombardier Dash 8 / Q-Series
airliner by recognizing the Toronto aircraft factory and its thousands
of employees.
With the delivery of the 1,000th aircraft, the Dash 8 / Q-Series airliner earns the distinction of being the World’s top selling new generation turboprop-powered commercial airliner. Entering airline service 25 year ago, the Dash 8 / Q-Series aircraft family is in widespread use throughout the world carrying passengers and on special missions such as coastal and border patrols.
The Bombardier Aerospace factory in north Toronto is one of only two factories in the world that build large turboprop passenger aircraft, and Downsview Airport is one of only seven airports in the world that assembles internationally-certified commercial airliners.
The Dash 8 / Q Series is the third aircraft family built in Toronto to surpass the 1,000 aircraft milestone. During the Second World War, the de Havilland Canada built more than 1,500 D.H. 82 Tiger Moth trainers for the RCAF and 1,133 Mosquito fighter-bombers for combat use overseas.
The de Havilland of Aircraft of Canada Limited (DHC) first opened a factory at Downsview in September 1929 and moved to its present location in 1954 when its original factory was purchased for an air force base. Bombardier with the Ontario government bought DHC from Boeing in 1992. Bombardier acquired full ownership in 1998.
