July 14, 2011 – Edmonton-based author Danielle Metcalfe-Chenail has been named a finalist in Chatelaine Magazine's 2011 Women of the Year Awards in the "Maverick" category along with Sheila Fraser, Elizabeth May, Buffy Sainte Marie and five others. Public voting is taking place on the Chatelaine site until July 30th and winners will be announced later this summer.
The 29-year-old had her first book, For the Love of Flying: The Story of Laurentian Air Services, published in 2009; is the first female president of the Canadian Aviation Historical Society (which boasts 1000 members worldwide); and recently hosted its annual conference in Edmonton. She was also recently named one of Edmontonians’ “Sizzling 20 Under 30” for 2011.
In 2010 she spent three months as Writer-in-Residence at Berton House, Pierre Berton’s childhood home in Dawson City, Yukon to research northern aviation history for an upcoming book. Alumni of the prestigious retreat, which only hosts four writers each year, include Charlotte Gray and Ken McGoogan.
Metcalfe-Chenail grew up in Ottawa and lived across North America and England, before coming to Edmonton. She has an M.A. in Canadian history from the University of British Columbia but writes across a number of genres.
