Sept. 9, 2011, Memphis, Tn. - FedEx is in talks to purchase wide-body freighters from Boeing and Airbus SAS as it looks to replace its older fleet of cargo airliners.
FedEx is interested in acquiring about 50 aircraft, with Boeing's 767 and Airbus's A330 being considered, according to Bloomberg
The estimated value for the deal is several billion dollars, based on list prices of $167.7m for a new 767-300 freighter and $203.6m for an A330-200 freighter.
Second-hand 767 passenger models may be part of a purchase, allowing the Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx to convert the planes to fly cargo.
FedEx's board may consider an order at an upcoming meeting, although a final decision may not come for several months, with possible delays due to concerns about weak economic outlook and potential loss of US Postal Service business.
