Aug. 23, 2012, Manitou, Man. – Two men from Winnipeg are dead after their plane
went out of control and crashed into a lagoon in southern Manitoba.
RCMP say the men were aboard an Acro II aircraft – a two-seat
biplane – when it went down just after takeoff Tuesday evening from
the airstrip at Manitou, 80 km southwest of Winnipeg.
"The pilot did take off from Manitou airport, but it appears
that he did turn back towards the airport,'' Sgt. Line Karpish said.
"For reasons that we're still trying to determine, (he) lost
control of the ... aircraft and crashed into the lagoon just north
of the airport."
The plane was partly submerged, but bystanders were able to pull
the 48-year-old passenger from the wreckage.
"They were able to reach out to the passenger and get him out
and initiate CPR until (paramedics) arrived, unfortunately, to no
avail," Karpish said.
She says the 64-year-old pilot remained trapped in the plane, and
both men were pronounced dead just after 8 p.m.
The names of the victims were not released. The Transportation
Safety Board was also investigating.
