May 5, 2009, Moncton, N.B. – Approach Navigation Systems Inc. with assistance from Urban Systems Ltd., AMEC, and REW Electric has completed the first airfield lighting system using total LED technology in Fox Lake, Alberta for the Little Red River Cree Nation.
In November 2008, the first system was installed which included runway edge lights, taxi lights, threshold/end lights, approach Lighting, and windsock. The system when operating on full intensity setting draws less than 600 Watts, Brian Ahern, CEO of ANS says; “the newest technology has been incorporated into this system by implementing a complete new design, which maximizes the visual range of the LED”.
The system at Fox Lake is powered by commercial power and in normal operation (Mid range intensity) uses less than the power used for two threshold/ end lights of a conventional system. The LEDs have a guaranteed intensity level for 15 years and with no bulbs to burn out the cost for maintenance of the system is greatly reduced. A second system is currently being installed in the Yukon.
Because of the northern locations of Fox Lake and the Yukon airport the systems are being powered from one regulator (1Kw) however the system can operate in the majority of Canadian Airports with solar power alone. The cost for the system is less than conventional systems with the elimination of pulpits and isolation transformers and greatly reduced conductor sizes.
The new technology also includes a High Intensity LED Runway Guard Light (WAGGY) and complies with ICAO Annex XIV guidelines. Due to low power draw (36W) this light has the ability operate on solar power which negates the need for changing underground infrastructure.
