Arctic airships a possibility?

Sept. 6, 2011, Yellowknife, N.W.T. – A new deal between Yellowknife-based Discovery Air and a British manufacturer could finally see giant airships sailing majestically through Arctic skies.

Airship boosters have long claimed using lighter-than-air craft to haul equipment and supplies could make development cheaper in remote areas.

And because they would reduce the need for runways and ice roads, they could also be easier on the environment.

Discovery Air says a new generation of airships have finally made the design more practical.

It's working with the builder to fine-tune the design for the needs of northern industry.

The company hopes to get its first airship in 2014.
