Aug. 17, 2009. Calgary – Western Avionics has announced that the CommuniCube is capable of streaming Emergency Data directly from the Flight Data Recorder buss, plus any other discreet
input, to the ground.

This CommuniCube feature has been available for four years and is included in most
installations.

The CommuniCube is an aircraft wireless server and is used in several different aviation applications, making it a true multi-mission box. Applications range from simple FOQA data transfer, to moving EMS patient data ahead of the aircraft to the hospital.

This flexibility has been utilized to allow Emergency Data Automated Transfer (EDAT). In extreme cases, like Air France flight 447, where the pilot doesn’t even have the time to push a button, the CommuniCube can sense sudden changes in aircraft behavior and begin sending data immediately to the operations center.

Advertisment

The data transfer can be initiated automatically or through a pilot initiated “panic” button. This information could be vital in locating an aircraft and later determining causes, especially if the FDR cannot be recovered.

The CommuniCube is currently flying in commercial aircraft worldwide and using it’s four available methods of data communication to exchange current aircraft data with operational centers anywhere on the planet.
