Jan. 22, 2009, Ottawa – Air Canada, Air Transat, Jazz Air LP and WestJet have come together to create the National Airlines Council of Canada (“NACC”), a new air carrier trade association focused on promoting public policy and legislation favourable to the global success of the Canadian commercial airline industry and to the health of the Canadian economy.
Passenger aviation has evolved in recent decades from a luxury item into an everyday necessity for thousands of Canadians travlling for business and personal reasons. This travel directly contributes almost $5.5 billion in GDP (2005) to the Canadian economy, as well as delivering many spin-off benefits.
Canada depends on its national airline industry to keep pace with this modern reality. However, Canadian passengers and airlines are being forced to bear a burden of regulations, fees and taxes unlike those levied in any other transportation sector. The NACC is committed to securing the regulatory changes essential to ensuring that safe, sustainable and competitive air travel is available to Canadians today and in the future.
The NACC (in French, Conseil national des lignes aériennes du Canada, or CNLA) was officially launched on January 21, 2009.
“On behalf of the NACC Board of Directors, we are pleased to have a Council that will directly represent our point of view on the very specific challenges we face today s passenger air carriers,” said the Board’s first Chair, Sean Durfy, President and CEO of WestJet.
NACC’s Mission Statement
The mission of the National Airlines Council of Canada (NACC) is to ensure that safe, sustainable and competitive air travel is available to Canadian consumers. The NACC was founded by Canada’s largest commercial airlines to help develop the legislative, policy and regulatory framework that is necessary to foster the world-class air transportation system that is essential to our country’s prosperity.
