Speakers finalized for Careers in Aviation Toronto

On April 28 at the Jazz Aviation Hangar in Mississauga, ON, more than 200 students and aviation professionals will take part in a one-day conference, called Careers in Aviation. The day, hosted by both Wings and Helicopters magazines will include six unique, engaging sessions focused on the future workforce and entrepreneurship of Canadian aviation.

This glimpse into aviation career development is also supported by one of the greatest opportunities available to attendees at Careers in Aviation, namely mentor sessions, where aviation experts -- in a non-appointment format -- can help guide your interests and describe career possibilities based on their own experiences and passions.

The day will kick off with a keynote by Steve Linthwaite, Vice-president, Flight Operations, for Jazz Aviation LP, which is one of the largest regional airlines in the world, serving more than 70 destinations in Canada and the United States. The location of the event itself provides a rare opportunity to see the inside of one of the country’s busiest hangars.

In his keynote, Captain Linthwaite will share the Jazz story and his insight on industry trends. He began his career with Jazz in 1986 when he joined Austin Airways as a pilot. He has extensive experience on both the Dash-8 and CRJ as a Captain. Linthwaite was appointed director of flight operations at Jazz in 2006.

Jim Armstrong, Helicopter Pilot and Assistant Chief Flight Instructor with Essential Helicopters of North Bay, Ontario, will then share a view of the rotary world. Armstrong is an experienced commercial helicopter pilot with more than 15 years of active flying. He joined Essential Helicopters in 2010.

Business aviation opportunities will be the focus of the next session presented by Skyservice’s Marshall Myles, President and Director, and Lyn Shinn, Vice-president, Central Region and Pre-Owned Aircraft Sales. They will share insight into the corporate approach to Canadian aviation and the many career opportunities available within this growing sector of the industry.

Stan Kuliavas, Vice-president, Sales & Business Development of Levaero Aviation, will then present a keynote called Building blocks, The world of aerospace. Kuliavas is responsible for all aircraft sales and marketing at Levaero, and also oversees the planning and execution of its growth strategy. A licensed pilot and graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, he has nearly a decade of aviation experience and OEM product involvement.

The fifth session of the day, entitled Ground to air: Exploring possibilities in maintenance and avionics, will be led by Tim Anderson, Owner of Anderson Aviation Services, who is also a Professor with Fanshawe College, Norton Wolf School of Aviation. Prior to starting Anderson Aviation in 2011, Anderson spent more than 10 years working throughout Canada and internationally on a variety of aircraft from 65hp Cubs to large airliners. His experience includes work throughout North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Antarctica, including both the North and South Poles.

Contessa Bishop will round out the day with a keynote entitled So you want to be a fixed wing pilot? Bishop is a Q400 captain with Jazz Aviation, a Class 1 freelance flight instructor, a co-chair of the 2017 Canadian Women In Aviation Conference (CWIA), and an independent consultant. Since joining the Royal Canadian Air Cadets at the age of 13, Bishop has spent a life in aviation and formed a career as diverse and dynamic as the industry itself, spanning training, cargo, corporate and airline operations.

Careers in Aviation Toronto will also feature more than 35 exhibitors, including many of Canada’s industry-leading companies, schools and associations to provide a glimpse into opportunities in Canadian aviation.

Some of the day’s mentors include: Jacqueline Bailey, VP Inflight, Sterling/ICFS Aviation Group; Jason Fogg, VP Operations, MAG Canada; David Lane, Deputy Fire Chief, Training and Development Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute; Anne Pangrazzi, President and owner, Apex Aircraft Sales Ltd.; Mike Rosenlund, Program Development Officer, Air Cadet League of Canada, Ontario Provincial Committee; Jeff Thorn, Manager, Security Operational Support, Greater Toronto Airports Authority; and Amr Yosry, Program Supervisor, Rockwell Collins, and Ground School Instructor, Stratos Aviation.
