Cornwall airport expansion plan now a possibility

Oct. 25, 2011, Cornwall, Ont. - The Cornwall Regional Airport can look at expanding now that South Glengarry has won a court battle to expropriate a six-hectare piece of land.

A $5.2 million plan has been in the works since 2009 to expand the runway at the Summerstown airport, east of Cornwall, by 450 metres and to build an airpark for business.

City councillor Syd Gardiner, who sits on the airport commission, says the land owner was offered $86,000 for the land, a price 10 to 15 per cent above the assessed value.

But he says the landowner countered with a $150,000 offer before the commission decided to go the expropriation route.

For Gardiner it's been a four-year quest to market the airport to investors, and he says now it's time for the local MP and MPP to recognize the economic benefit of the airport.

Gardiner says the airport could bring a $7-million benefit to the local economy and create up to 35 jobs.
