Embraer 145 skids off runway in Ottawa

It was a scary ride for the 44 people aboard as a United Express jet made a very bumpy landing at Ottawa's international airport.

Sept. 6, 2011, Ottawa – It was a scary ride for the 44 people aboard as a
United Express jet made a very bumpy landing at Ottawa's international
airport.

Those on board say terrified passengers started screaming as the flight from Chicago skidded off a wet runway while landing yesterday afternoon.

No one was hurt, but the plane — a Brazilian built Embraer 145 — suffered damage to its undercarriage and to a wing that leaked fuel after grinding into the dirt.

Fast acting fire crews made sure the fuel didn't ignite.

The Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the incident.

It's not the first time a United Express Embraer 145 has skidded off a runway in Ottawa.

One with 36 people aboard did the same thing in June 2010, sending three people to hospital.

Eight regional airlines operate feeder flights for United Airlines under the United Express brand name.

The plane involved in yesterday's incident was operated by Trans States Airlines.
