March 6, 2012, Ottawa - NAV CANADA announced today that the Civil Aviation Department (CAD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China has selected NAV CANADA for the provision of Air Traffic Services Data Management System (ATSDMS) to manage and display critical air traffic control information.

NAVCANatm technology will be used in ATSDMS to be installed in the air traffic control towers and centres for the Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). Development and deployment of the system will occur in two phases, the first of which is now underway.

NAVCANinfo is the foundation for ATSDMS to be delivered to Hong Kong, which will manage and display extensive operational data, and safety-critical information to air traffic controllers in real time. All of the information layouts, displays and notifications will be customizable to meet the requirements of each controller, helping to reduce distractions and enhance safety.

"We are pleased to have been selected by the CAD to deploy NAVCANatm technology in Hong Kong," said NAV CANADA President and CEO John Crichton. "We look forward to working with their team on the installation of this world-leading technology that will support the enhanced transfer and management of critical operational information."

In addition to the enhanced functionality provided by NAVCANinfo, three other components will be customized to meet CAD's requirements.

The Management Information Display System will provide a view of real time operational data, such as departure/arrival rates, runway information and local weather conditions, to the CAD management.

The Collaborative Decision Making Gateway will have the capability to share near real time operational data with the external agencies, including the Airport Authority Hong Kong, Hong Kong Observatory, airlines, etc. The "at-a-glance" view of core operational information will support enhanced collaborative decision making to improve the safety and efficiency of operations at the HKIA.

An enhanced Air Traffic Control Data Network is also part of the ATSDMS. This network will be the communications backbone for all the new air traffic control systems for the HKIA, integrating the NAVCANatm technology with other new technologies to be adopted by the CAD for provision of air navigation services.
