Jan. 26, 2009, Edmonton – L-3 Communications Holdings Inc. is closing its Spar Aerospace facility in Edmonton, putting 185 employees out of work.

New York-based L-3 Communications said the facility, which has been operating for more than 40 years, is "no longer viable.''

It reasons were "a changing competitive environment'' and the loss of a contract three years ago for the maintenance of Canada's fleet of Hercules CC130 aircraft.

"Since that time, L-3 has done everything in its power to keep the facility open, including actively sourcing contracts from customers all over the world,''  Peter Gartenburg, vice-president of Ottawa Operations for L-3 Communications said in a release.

"While we have been successful in securing some work, the facility has not secured enough new business to remain viable.''

The company said other Spar Aerospace facilities, "activities and obligations'' will not be impacted by the decision. SPAR Aerospace has facilities in Edmonton, Alta., Trenton, Ont. and
Venice, Italy.

L-3 Communications, which employs about 64,000 people, bought Toronto-based Spar Aerospace Ltd. in 2002.

It is a prime contractor in aircraft modernization and maintenance as well as high technology products and systems.
