Leggat Aviation in October 2020 delivered two new Cessna 172S Skyhawks to FNTI, formerly known as the First Nations Technical Institute, an Indigenous institute offering educational opportunities aimed at enhancing the capacity and strength of learners and communities.

FNTI focuses on providing culturally rich post-secondary programs in partnership with several Ontario colleges and universities. Most courses are presented in an intensive mode, and delivered in communities across the country, allowing students to learn while they continue to work. FNTI is an Indigenous-owned and governed post-secondary institute with 35 years of history.

FNTI’s Aviation program is the only post-secondary Indigenous aviation program of its kind in Canada, providing hands-on flight training for students interested in pursuing a pilot’s licence or working in the aviation industry.

Graduates will hold a commercial licence with their rating of choice and will also meet the eligibility criteria to obtain a Flight Dispatcher designation and a Two-Crew and Cruise Relief Pilot (IATRA) certification. The curriculum meets the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, requirements for post-secondary studies, as well as Transport Canada regulations and standards for flight training.
