Oct. 21, 2009, Hanover – Deutsche Lufthansa AG and its subsidiaries, already using the FuelPlus Enterprise Fuel Management System EFM for years, have now also implemented the additional Emissions Module.

All airlines operating flights from and to member states of the European Union will be obliged to pay for the emissions generated by their planes starting in 2012. The airlines are required to present approved plans, which will be used to record, document and monitor tonne-kilometer and CO2 emissions data, by the end of 2009.

In Germany, the Federal Environment Agency is responsible for obtaining said data. The airlines are required to submit the monitoring plans in due time in order to be eligible for free emissions allowances starting in 2012.

FuelPlus was selected as Lufthansa’s preferred solution after its project team had thoroughly tested the software. Lufthansa’s main requirement was that the program fully complies with EU regulations concerning the Emission Trading Scheme (ETS).

Only approved systems are considered for the benchmarking process in 2010, which will involve gathering important transport output data (tonne-kilometer). Based on this data, free emissions allowances will be granted. Transport output is calculated using the most recent figures, including the number of flights operated, payloads and great-circle distances between the airports of departure and arrival.

Thanks to FuelPlus EFM, the monitoring plans for recording and evaluating transport and emissions data could be realized in only three months. Torsten Heiling, Manager IT Systems at Lufthansa, is optimistic about the recent developments, ”FuelPlus EFM Emissions’ product maturity along with the comprehensive product and process documentation proved an invaluable help for developing our monitoring plans. We are convinced that FuelPlus will also be tremendously helpful for generating the annual reports.“
