New pedestrian tunnel will link Billy Bishop

Jan. 11, 2012, Toronto - Construction is due to start next month on a pedestrian tunnel linking Toronto with the downtown Billy Bishop island airport.

Toronto Port Authority president Geoff Wilson says the 240-metre-long tunnel will be both above and below ground.

Passengers going into the tunnel from the Toronto side will enter through a pavilion, and head down through elevators.

Wilson says construction is expected to take two years.

Currently, the only way to get to the Billy Bishop island airport is by ferry.

It's a 120-metre trip, making it one of the world's shortest ferry rides.

In terms of passengers handled, Billy Bishop was Canada's 14th busiest airport in 2010.
