Boeing Vancouver labs opens its doors in Yaletown
Boeing Vancouver celebrated the opening of its new downtown labs facility, focused on data analytics-driven software solutions on Thursday. The Vancouver labs will be focused on rapidly developing solutions to some of the most complex problems facing the aviation industry today, helping airlines and other aircraft operators increase efficiencies and drive costs down. The labs house 50 data science, consulting and software development professionals and are an extension of Boeing Vancouver’s existing facility in Richmond, B.C., which employs more than 200 highly skilled software engineers and data scientists.

“For 16 years, we have been part of the Boeing family, and during that time, we’ve built a thriving software solutions business at our Richmond facility,” said Boeing Vancouver president Bob Cantwell. “Over the last five years, we’ve developed one of the largest, most robust data science centres not only in the Lower Mainland, but across the Boeing organization.” Driven by the data insights delivered by this group, the labs will focus on delivering solutions to Boeing’s global customer base at a rapidly increased pace over traditional, enterprise development.
Amrik Virk, B.C. Minister of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ Services, spoke at today’s opening celebration. “The Boeing Vancouver labs will have a real impact on the aviation sector, helping to make aircraft maintenance and operations more reliable and efficient,” said Minister Virk. “The opening of this office furthers B.C.’s reputation as a leading source of talent using big data and innovation; reflecting the goals of the #BCTECH Strategy.”
Boeing Vancouver is part of Boeing’s digital aviation organization, which is focused on helping airlines and other aircraft operators operate more efficiently and drive costs out of their businesses. “Our customers are increasingly looking for ways to fly and maintain their airplanes more efficiently, schedule crews more effectively and recover from schedule disruptions more quickly,” said Kevin Crowley, Boeing vice president, digital aviation.“The data analytics-driven software solutions being developed in this lab are central to these things.” Crowley was on hand to celebrate the addition of the Vancouver labs to the digital aviation organization along with Roberto Valla, Boeing Defense, Space & Security vice president of global sales – Canada.
The labs initiative is in part a product of Boeing Vancouver’s strong relationships with local industry and academia, and with the opening of its new facility in downtown Vancouver’s Yaletown neighbourhood, the company plans to continue to strengthen these ties with industry and networking events throughout the upcoming months.
