Saskatchewan fires burn on, annual budget blown

Saskatchewan's makeshift evacuation centres are overflowing, and the province has already burned through its annual firefighting budget.

Premier Brad Wall said he expected 4,000 to 5,000 evacuees would be displaced by Tuesday night as flames and heavy smoke persisted across the north.

“We know we’re through our firefighting budget for the year, but we’re not going to worry about that right now,” Wall said, adding vulnerable people and infrastructure are the priority, so the government will continue ramp up efforts to tackle the situation.

Personnel and aircraft from Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland have joined local crews, and Wall said international help is on the way in the form of a crew from South Dakota. | READ MORE
