June 29, 2009, Kitchener, Ont. – Police confirm at least one person was killed early today in the
crash of a small plane near the Region of Waterloo International
The plane crashed and caught fire at about 8:30 a.m. in a field just east of the southwestern Ontario airport.
Waterloo Region police Insp. Steve Beckett says there is at
least one fatality and officials are still trying to confirm whether
there was anyone else on-board.
Beckett added there is extensive wreckage.
A witness, who identified himself only as Daryl, told Kitchener
radio station 570News the plane appeared to overshoot a runway.
Other witnesses say a low-flying small plane banked and
nose-dived into a field and burst into flames after impact.
Police spokesman Olaf Heinzel said the call came in at about
8:27 a.m. and “it’s still very early on as to what happened.”
Heinzel said the investigation will likely be handed off to the National Transportation Safety Board.
