Establishing the Canadian operations marks another phase in the company’s development and commitment to the global aerospace industry. The company’s roots were in research and development of Duralumin in 1916, leading to the manufacture of materials for aircraft propeller blades and the formation of Sumitomo Metals Industries in 1935. The Aero Products Division was created in 1956 and began manufacture of aircraft landing gears, hydraulic equipment, wooden rotor blades for helicopters, etc. In 1961, the Aero Products Division of Sumitomo Metals Industries, Ltd. became independent under the name Sumitomo Precision Products Co., Ltd..

Initial investment in North America was in 1975 when the company established a New York office and received approval for heat exchanger manufacture under ASME standards. In the late 1980s, the company began development and manufacture of equipment for space applications. ISO 9001 certification was received in 1997 for aircraft components and aircraft engine components. The following decade brought global joint ventures and acquisitions.  As well, in 2000 Sumitomo Precision Products USA was formed.

Most recently, SPPCA was established in April 2012 and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Sumitomo Precision Products. The Canadian Government and the Government of Ontario worked closely with Sumitomo Precision Products Co., Ltd. during the company’s site location evaluation and have offered to continue to work with the company as it establishes its Canadian operation.
