April 30, 2008, Tucson, AZ – Universal Avionics Systems Corporation has announced its certification program that introduces Space-Based Augmentation System (SBAS) navigation capability to the Bombardier Q Series aircraft operating community.

The Universal Avionics Wide Area Augmentation System Flight Management System (WAAS-FMS) was chosen by Japan Air Commuter (JAC) to provide SBAS-based navigation for its Bombardier Q400 turboprop fleet. Bombardier Aerospace will provide installation support and coordinate with Universal for additional engineering assistance to meet JAC’s implementation timelines.

The retrofit-upgrade to Universal’s SBAS-capable FMS will provide the JAC Q400 fleet with the most precise GPS approach capabilities available to date. The WAAS-FMS internal GPS sensor/receiver provides position guidance for published SBAS LPV and LNAV/VNAV approach procedures, offering operators greater runway capability and flexibility in airport selection. The published U.S. WAAS/LPV precision approach criterion defines minima as low as 200 feet with ∏-mile visibility.

Japan’s SBAS service provider, the MSTAT Satellite-Based Augmentation System (MSAS), was commissioned by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) for aviation use on September 27, 2007. As with the North American WAAS SBAS system, MSAS is fully compliant with the Standard and Recommended Practices (SARPs) of Annex-10 in ICAO. Universal’s WAAS-FMS is compatible with other SBAS systems, including the highly anticipated European EGNOS system.
