U.S. astronaut will be one of Embry-Riddle’s summer stars
April 24, 2013, Daytona Beach, Fla. - U.S. Astronaut Nicole Stott, an Embry-Riddle alumna and trustee, will bring her expertise and enthusiasm to Embry-Riddle July 28 to Aug. 3 to lead one of the university’s summer programs for the first time. Stott is one of Embry-Riddle’s most notable graduates, with two space shuttle flights and a three-month mission on the International Space Station to her credit.

Joined by astronaut trainers and NASA officials, Stott will direct a residential Mission Discovery Summer Camp at the Daytona Beach Campus, in Daytona Beach, Fla., guiding students ages 14-18 in developing basic research projects that could potentially be conducted in space. Tuition for the five-day course is $900.
Also new this year, Embry-Riddle’s Worldwide Campus is joining the university’s Prescott and Daytona Beach campuses in offering fun, hands-on summer programs for youths interested in exploring aviation, aerospace and related fields.
The Columbus, Ga., campus of the Worldwide Campus, in conjunction with the Coca-Cola Space Science Center in Columbus, is offering a nonresidential Aerospace & Robotics Summer Camp from June 24-28 for students ages 14-18. Held at the Science Center, the program will feature aviation career exploration, an aerospace day, a space adventure day, a field trip to Pratt & Whitney and instruction on robotics and unmanned systems. Embry-Riddle’s 2013 summer camps run from June 3 to Aug. 9, with individual camps ranging in length from five days to 49 days. All residential camps include on-campus meals, classroom instruction, field trips, books and other materials. Supervised on-campus housing is included in all residential camps except the Generations program. Nonresidential day camps are also offered.
Application is required a month before the start date of each camp.

Aerial Robotics/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Prescott Campus)
In a hands-on environment, students will learn how aerial robots work and gain an understanding of the control theory behind them. Students will build, control and fly their own robots and compete against their peers in a culminating challenge. For students ages 15-18 who are U.S. citizens. This program runs July 7-12. Tuition is $1,075.
Aerospace I (Daytona Beach Campus)
Aspiring astronauts and scientists will learn about NASA programs, space shuttle operations and the history of space flight. The course fosters a basic understanding of space and space technology through field trips, guest speakers and classroom lectures. Students design and build two space-station models, one on land and one in a zero-gravity environment. For students ages 15-18. The program runs July 7-26. Tuition is $3,900.
Aerospace Engineering (Prescott Campus)
Participants will learn the science of aerospace engineering, how materials stress, strain and break, and the principles of aerospace design. Two tracks are offered: the Aero Track focuses on aircraft and runs from June 23-28 while the Astro Track concentrates on spacecraft and runs from June 16-21. Both camps are for students ages 15-18. Tuition for each track is $1,075.
Aviation Career Exploration (Daytona Beach Campus)
Students will use state-of-the-art simulation devices to sample various aspects of aircraft maintenance, air traffic management, engineering, flight, human factors, meteorology and space technology. Also included are field trips, guest speakers, labs and classroom instruction. For students ages 12-17. The program runs July 7-13 and July 28 to Aug. 3. Tuition is $900.
Aviation Discovery (Prescott Campus)
Participants will explore the many careers available in aviation and take a flight in a Cessna 172 aircraft. For students ages 12-15. This program runs June 20-22. Tuition is $525.
Computer/Electrical Engineering (Prescott Campus)
Students will design, build, track and recover a payload that will launch on a high-altitude balloon to near outer space. They will then analyze and research downloaded data that could reveal new phenomena. For students ages 15-18. The program runs June 23-28. Tuition is $1,075.
Executive Training Academy (Daytona Beach Campus)
Female professionals lead girls ages 14-17 in activities such as resume and scholarship writing, mock interviews, etiquette practice and more. The girls will form micro-companies and work with top female executives from the area to develop and present a final product. Participants will leave with the confidence that they can be leaders in the business community. The program runs July 14-19. Tuition is $450.
Generations Program (Daytona Beach Campus)
A duo of parent/child or grandparent/grandchild can share experiences as they learn about aircraft maintenance, air traffic management, flight, meteorology and space technology. The course includes flight fees, simulator sessions, field trips, classroom instruction and materials. The program runs July 29 to Aug. 2. Housing is not included. Tuition is $1,800 per pair.
Global Security and Intelligence “Spy” Camp (Prescott Campus)
In this immersion program, students will use the tools of the security and intelligence trade to develop surveillance skills as well as exploring cryptology and the art of illusion. For students ages 15-18 who are U.S. citizens. The program runs July 14-19 and July 21-26. Tuition is $1,075.
Robotics and Autonomous Systems (Daytona Beach Campus)
Students will learn concepts from mechanical, electrical and computer engineering from faculty and the collegiate robotics competition team. Together they will work to design, build and test their own autonomous robots. For students ages 15-18. The program runs July 14-20. Tuition is $900.
Flight Exploration (Prescott and Daytona Beach Campuses)
In this introductory course on flying and flight training, students will practice flight maneuvers and get acquainted with how an airplane responds to cockpit commands. Participants also learn how to comply with aviation regulations and how to analyze weather conditions. The course includes field trips, flight and ground lab instruction and a logbook to record flight hours. Four sessions are offered at the Prescott Campus for students ages 14-18: June 9-14, June 16-21, July 21-26 and July 28 to Aug. 2. Two sessions are offered at the Daytona Beach Campus for students ages 12-17: June 23-29 and July 21-27. Prescott tuition is $1,975 and Daytona Beach tuition is $1,950.
Aviation Voyage (Daytona Beach Campus)
Students ages 12-17 will apply the lessons learned in Flight Exploration to more advanced procedures such as flight planning and preflighting an aircraft. Students are required to bring back their logbook from Flight Exploration to continue recording their flight hours. The course includes flight fees, simulator sessions, field trips, classroom instruction and materials. The program runs July 7-13. Tuition is $2,100.
Three SunFlight programs (Daytona Beach Campus) offer flight instruction. All students must possess a FAA Class II Medical/Student Pilot Certificate before the start date of these courses. Open to students ages 16-18. Tuition includes field trips, ground lab, classroom instruction, books, materials and a deposit toward flight fees.
SunFlight Solo. Qualified students can solo an aircraft by the end of the program. The course runs July 14-30. Tuition is $6,500.
SunFlight Private Pilot. Students can earn a Private Pilot Certificate. The program runs June 23 to Aug. 8. Tuition is $18,500.
SunFlight Custom Flight Training Camp. Qualified private pilots can continue their flight training through a variety of activities, such as undergoing upset training or gaining an instrument rating or multi-engine land rating. Course dates and tuition will be based on the flight training needed.

Girls Exploring Math and Science (GEMS)
During this week-long experience, female students will participate in hands-on projects and experiments focused on science, technology, engineering and math and will also earn Girl Scout badges. For girls ages 7-12. The program runs June 10-14. Tuition is $275.
Computer Science & Animation
Female students who have an interest in developing video animations and creating animated stories will learn the basics of computing concepts that will prepare them for later success in programming studies. For girls ages 12-14. The program runs June 10-14. Tuition is $275.
Students will learn the basics of weather, air traffic control, forensic science, maintenance and aviation through information sessions and hands-on activities. For students ages 7-12. The program runs June 17-21. Tuition is $275.
Taught by faculty and graduate assistants, this hands-on camp emphasizes critical thinking through creative problem solving and artistic ability. This program has two tracks: one camp for students ages 7-9 that runs June 17-21 and another for students ages 10-12 that runs July 22-26. Tuition is $275.
SeaPerch Water Robotics Camp
Faculty will demonstrate remote-controlled water robots in the Nonlinear Wave Lab. Students will learn about buoyancy, circuits and propellers in relation to water safety under ocean ripple tides and turbulent currents. Student teams will build, test, analyze and compete with underwater robots. For students ages 12-14. The program runs June 17-21. Tuition is $275.
In this interactive experience, faculty and their assistants will teach the basics of robotics, electronics and computer programming. For students ages 7-12. The program runs June 24-28. Tuition is $275.
