In his new position, van der Stege will be responsible for the Airport Authority’s revenue development, both aeronautical and non-aeronautical. This includes overseeing strategies to increase flights, destinations, passengers and cargo; and to grow revenue from non-aeronautical sources including parking, shops, restaurants, advertising, and vehicle rentals. He will also take the lead to attract and retain terminal building tenants as well as the commercial development of airport property.

“Bert’s diverse background in airline operations and management, and strategic commercial development will be a significant addition to our team,” says Joyce Carter, HIAA president and CEO. “His international experience and background will be a terrific asset to the airport and our entire business community.”

van der Stege’s most recent role was vice president commercial with First Air, Canada’s largest independent regional airline. In his three years at First Air (2013-2016), he was instrumental in transforming the organization and achieving a financial turnaround. Bert began his career with Lufthansa where he worked in various management roles from 2001-2010. From 2010-2013, he served as Vice President Planning and Marketing at Arik Air, west Africa’s largest airline and with RwandAir as their Commercial Director.

Bert appeared on the cover of this past July’s Wings magazine and was recognized as one of Canada’s top talents in aviation under 40.

Born in the Netherlands, he studied international business at universities in Groningen (NL), Auckland (NZ), Mainz (DE) and London (U.K.).

“I’m looking forward to coming to Halifax, becoming part of your growing community, and contributing to what I see as the very promising future of Halifax Stanfield International Airport,” says van der Stege. “There are some wonderful opportunities ahead for us, and I’m very pleased to have the chance to be part of the growth of the airport, the city and the province.”
