Jan. 19, 2015, Gander, N.L. – WestJet is adding new flights to hubs in central and western Newfoundland, giving travellers more options for connecting with major cities on the mainland.

In a news release on Monday, the airline said it is adding flights from Gander to Halifax and Toronto in the coming months.

The seasonal service to Toronto will begin in early May, and the Halifax connection begins in July.

Meanwhile, WestJet is expanding its service from Deer Lake through its regional carrier, WestJet Encore, with a daily service to Halifax starting in mid-July.

Gander was one of two new destinations that the airline added on Monday, with the other being Houston, Tex.

WestJet executive vice-president Bob Cummings said the move back to Gander is the latest example of how the airline is expanding.

“Houston and Gander will connect more people, more often, to established and emerging energy markets, and we continue to improve service for our growing number of business travellers,” Cummings said.

WestJet left Gander a decade ago after using the airport for a couple of years.

Jamie Schwartz, chief executive officer of the Deer Lake Regional Airport, said the addition of a daily flight to Halifax is an “exciting” development for travellers on the west coast.

“This new daily service will stimulate travel to and from the area and the entire region will benefit from these new flights,” he said.

Meanwhile, WestJet also said it will be adding more frequent connections between St. John’s and Halifax.
