Winners to be selected for Artflight 2009

May 19, 2009 – Ottawa – The Canada Aviation Museum is proud to
announce the opening of the 2009 edition of its biennial exhibition
entitled Artflight. This year’s show hosts a wonderful array of
important works of aviation art with a range of styles and
interpretations based on the theme Miles, Milestones and Moments,
celebrating the centennial of the first powered flight in Canada.

Since it was first held in 1992, Artflight has featured over 650 works
by artists from across Canada and around the world. The 2009 edition
inspired over 60 works by artists from across North America and Europe,
exhibiting 27 works. On May 14, the jury will meet to select and
announce the winners as the new exhibition is officially launched in
the presence of many of the artists and their families. The winners
will be announced beginning at 3 p.m. (Digital images of the works are
available upon request.)

The 2009 jury members are Mr. Charles C. Hill, Curator of Canadian Art
at the National Gallery of Canada and Member of the Order of Canada,
Mr. Michael Martchenko, award winning artist, illustrator, author of
children’s literature and member of the CAAA, and Stephen Quick,
Associate Director at the Canada Aviation Museum and visual artist and
aviation illustrator.

On May 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., in celebration of the opening
of Artflight and International Museum Day, Canadian Aviation Artist
Association member, François Gauvreau will offer a free workshop at the
Canada Aviation Museum that will provide participants with a basic
understanding of aviation art. The workshop will also include a brief
annotated tour of the new Artflight exhibition, and a special sketching
session using an aircraft model. Pre-registration is recommended as

The Canada Aviation Museum is Canada's finest aviation museum with an
internationally renowned aeronautical collection. The Museum, a
component of the Canada Science and Technology Museum Corporation, is
located at the intersection of Aviation and Rockcliffe Parkways, just
10 minutes from Parliament Hill.
