Sept. 5, 2013, Winnipeg – The Webster competition is an annual national
event and therefore it is held in a different location across the
country each year. This year, it was hosted by Harv’s Air located at the
St. Andrew’s airport just outside Winnipeg, Man. The weather was exceptional the entire week allowing for a flawless competition to be run without any delays in the flight testing. Harv’s Air is to be highly commended for it excellent hospitality, beautiful facilities and pristine aircraft, all of which complemented the entire competition.

During Webster Week, all of the finalists received a formal fire-fighting course and certificates courtesy of Aeroformatech who brought their mobile unit out for the duration. They also toured the Winnipeg FIR facilities and a special tour of NORAD as well. This was culminated on Friday evening at Allied Wings flying King Air and helicopter simulators with one of our finalists getting to fly an aerobatic flight in the Allied Wings Grob.

It is with great pleasure that the Webster Team announces the 2013 Trophy winner,
Takashi Hirose. Takashi is the Eastern Ontario finalist currently enrolled in the Algonquin College Aviation Program and flying out of Ottawa Flying Club.

This is the second recent winner for Algonquin and OFC. The first was Cory Raby in 2009. The Webster winner receives numerous awards and prizes from program supporters including two tickets from Air Canada for North America and the Caribbean, a flight with the Snowbirds and a beautiful Hamilton X-Wind watch. All of the finalists receive excellent prizes which can be reviewed in the application package on the Webster website at webstertrophy.ca.

The 2013 runner-up is Stuart Loney. Stuart is currently training out of Brampton Flight Centre and is the Central Ontario finalist. Brampton has had three recent past winners, Francis Yanuzzi (2006), Andy Midcalf (2007) and Sandeep Nagpal (2008).

Yurey Wu, Western Ontario finalist flying out of the Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre was the very first recipient of the brand new NAV CANADA/Webster Trophy. This trophy is presented to the finalist with the highest score on a specifically designed NAV CANADA exam focusing on pilot/controller communications, airspace and operations around and at airports. The NAV CANADA Canada exam was also part of the overall scoring to determine the 2013 winner and runner-up along with a knowledge exam designed by Transport Canada Aviation Aircrew Examinations Civil Aviation Inspectors and two flight tests, one in the air and one in a Redbird Flight Training Device.

The 2014 Webster memorial Trophy Competition has already begun as of June 16 and next summer, the national portion will be hosted by Waterloo-Wellington Flight Centre, Kitchener-Waterloo, Ont. from Aug. 19-23.

This competition could not achieve its current status within the aviation community if it were not for the numerous supporters who bolster the program. Some contribute financially, others offer prizes and yet others offer invaluable services such as promotional posters, media, testing infrastructures, etc. Contributing as these supporters do results in an annual event which is remembered for a lifetime by the finalists. Each year at the conclusion of the current competition, it is important that we acknowledge and thank each of the Webster supporters for their generosity, time and energy to make this a truly Canadian national aviation experience.
