Boeing picks a retired admiral to lead a team that will review safety in manufacturing planes

January 17, 2024  By The Associated Press

Boeing is naming a retired Navy admiral to advise the company of quality-control matters. The company said Tuesday that Kirkland Donald will be a special adviser to CEO David Calhoun. Boeing says the retired admiral will make recommendations to improve oversight of quality in the company’s factories and those of its suppliers. The appointment is being announced a day after Boeing said it will increase quality inspections on its Boeing 737 Max 9 planes. Earlier this month, a panel blew out of the side of an Alaska Airlines Boeing jet as it flew three miles above Oregon. Federal regulators are grounding most Max 9 jets until they are satisfied the planes are safe.
