CAE MPL cadets head into home stretch

March 11, 2011, Hong Kong, China – CAE announced at the Asia
Pacific Airline Training Symposium (APATS) Ab Initio and Evidence-Based
Training conference that the 12 AirAsia cadets in CAE's Multi-crew
Pilot License (MPL) beta program class have successfully completed the
third of four program phases and are on track for a May graduation.

All cadets have passed three formal evaluations to date: an equivalent private pilot check ride, an equivalent instrument check ride, and an equivalent Beechjet type rating.

Each of the 12 CAE MPL cadets tested to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Level 6 (Expert) standard, administered by Canadian examiners at the end of the Intermediate phase at CAE SimuFlite in Dallas, Texas, USA. This proficiency indicates a high degree of confidence in the ability of the pilot to handle communications in a high workload environment. ICAO minimum guidelines require a Level 4 competency.

"We look forward to the successful completion of this beta program and the beginning of the cadets' careers as AirAsia pilots."

Phase IV – Advanced of the CAE MPL program is being conducted at CAE Training and Services in Toronto, Canada. The CAE Toronto facility has received Approved Training Organization (ATO) certification from Transport Canada. The Advanced phase is an expanded type rating course for the Airbus A320. Training integrates AirAsia Standard Operating Procedures and incorporates a CAE-built A320 full-flight simulator.

At the conclusion of the 14-month beta program, which began in March 2010, graduates are expected to receive an MPL license from Transport Canada and authority from the Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia (DCAM). The MPL license will be granted following the takeoff and landing phase of training in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Graduates will then enter AirAsia's initial operating experience program for Airbus A320 First Officers.

The CAE program is the first application of an MPL program to adhere to new performance-based ATO certification requirements developed by Transport Canada. The program is designed to ICAO standards for the MPL license.
