UK and Canada launch AI innovation challenge
A handful of government and private-sector operations have launched an AI challenge program aimed at start-ups, scale-ups, SMEs or researchers to illustrate how machine learning can improve aerodynamic testing for aeroplanes. More specifically, the challenge is designed for innovators to explore how AI technologies can help in the development of ice protection systems.
The program is organized by the UK Science and Innovation Network (SIN) in Canada, Digital Catapult, Bombardier and the Consortium in Aerospace and Research & Innovation in Canada (CARIC). Bombardier is taking the lead in terms of assessing the submissions, which are due October 5, 2018.
In describing the program’s focus, the organizers explain: “The development of ice protection systems involves detailed physical modelling and extensive testing in experimental facilities or in flight. During the testing process, video cameras provide valuable information on the surface water behaviour as it runs over and around protected surfaces, sometimes creating ice accumulations. While being a key component of ice protection system modelling, in practice, detailed surface water dynamics is difficult to observe. Improving the characterisation of such icing test data has the potential to enhance physical understanding for engineers and reduce the development costs.”
The UK-Canada AI Innovation challenge will result in six finalists (three UK-based and three Canada-based) being selected to pitch in Montreal to a judging panel of experts, which will include key representatives from Bombardier, the AI council and Real Ventures. The winning team will have the chance to participate in a mission in UK/Canada. They will be awarded a trip to either Canada or the UK to explore the country’s AI ecosystem.
