Qantas workers call off strike

Oct. 11, 2011, Sydney, Aus. - Qantas Airways engineers have called off a planned strike — but the airline says it is too late to reschedule dozens of cancelled and delayed flights.

The Australian Licenced Aircraft Engineers Association said Monday it was cancelling its four-hour strike because Qantas had threatened to withhold up to seven hours of pay from striking workers.

Qantas says there isn't enough time to reschedule the 40 flights that were cancelled and 24 that were delayed by up to three-and-a-half hours. The Australian airline says more than 11,000 passengers will be affected.

The union has staged a series of strikes over the past six weeks as it fights the airline over pay and work conditions.
